Basic Chalk & Chalk Bag Tips

As a rock climber, you probably don't need for anyone to explain to you why it is that chalk is a good thing to have on a climb. However, not all chalk was created equal, so even as a climber some questions may remain. When it comes to chalk & chalk bags, some very simple questions can be answered.

First, with chalk, you're usually going to have three major options – balls of chalk, a block of chalk, or chalk powder. Which one works best? Well, that's a question that has a different answer depending on when and where you're climbing. Blocks of chalk are cheap and can easily take care of basic moisture removal needs, balls of chalk will last longer and be more effective than other methods but are more costly, and bulk chalk is a good medium that allows your needs to be covered decently well so long as you're storing it properly (which is why we're talking about chalk & chalk bags, not just chalk).

Second, looking at chalk bags, you need to consider the size, shape, and fabric that you want. The size is a pretty obvious part of the equation, with the larger bags being the best choice for those going on longer climbs and the smaller ones designed for those taking shorter routes. Better safe than sorry, though, so aim above what you expect to do! Then you have the two major shapes – one being the “classic” tube and the other being designed for you to re-chalk your hands. It's usually worth it to pay a bit more for the “dip designed” version. The materials you choose can help hold in the chalk dust and keep things even on your hand. We advise going for fleece lined bags.

Chalk & chalk bags are just one of the many important things on your climbing checklist, but making the right choices can help you make the most out of your next adventure.
