Climbing helmets are just one of the many important items on the rock climbing gear checklist that you should be putting together before any major expedition. Some people have mistaken ideas about what rock climbing helmets are and what they're for, though. Not just any helmet will work well for rock climbing. Helmets designed for things like bikes and motorcycles are designed to protect your skull if you crash into something, and as a result have a lot of extra padding that would get in the way while rock climbing. Climbing helmets, on the other hand, have only minimal padding but a hard shell that's designed to prevent your head from getting smashed into by anything that drops from above you. Whether the item above you drops becomes something becomes loose from your own actions, from someone above you, or if someone above you has dropped something, a helmet is important. You should try to find a helmet that stays on and isn't too loose, but be sure that you allow blood-flow to your head. You don't want to get dizzy or lightheaded while you're climbing. The magic word to remember for something falling is “rock,” because whatever is falling, other climbers are likely to shout this word. Just keep your face forward so you're still under your climbing helmet and you should avoid anything too nasty. Most helmets come with adjustment wheels and fastening straps. Be sure to utilize all of these additional features to get your helmet working right for you.
