For those of us who love climbing, there's no shortage of options on how we can climb. One of the most popular ways (and for good reason) is bouldering. Bouldering gives you the opportunity to climb without the restrictions of harnesses and ropes. It's just you and gravity as you strive to conquer the short climb of the mountain. Sadly, you're human, and one of these days you or a buddy are going to fall. When you do, crash pads become your fail safe to keep you from getting too injured. A crash pad has a pretty simple construction. It is made up of layered foam with an outer edge of nylon or other durable material that won't easily get torn, and that keeps all the foam nicely in place. For additional convenience, many of these crash pads also have pockets, strings, or other areas where you can put the things that you won't want to be carrying when hiking or climbing. You're going to fold the crash pad in half when you hike it in, so be sure that you get one of a size you can handle. The thickness is generally just a few inches of foam, and the size
of the pad itself is usually about three feet by three feet. That
few inches of foam can be the difference between a couple bruises
and some major gashes thanks to your fall. Always remember to go
bouldering with a spotter, and never climb too high. When it's just
you and gravity out there, gravity has the home field advantage
and you need to take all the precautions you can get. Crash pads,
chalk, climbing shoes, sports tape, and appropriate clothing are
all important as you start your bouldering journey. |
